 A Memorable Vacation

Listen to the audio about my last holiday in Nayarit. Now do the same for you. Record yourself. Use the audio script below to help you prepare

Traveling in Mexico on holiday is good because there are nice beaches, and the weather is, almost anywhere, better than Juarez.

There are lots of good places to go but my favorite place is definitely Nayarit. I went to Tepic, Nayarit, last year in March, just for a week during spring break.
I flew to Guadalajara, and then I took a three-hour bus ride to Tepic. Personally, I enjoy traveling by bus, and I think it’s a really relaxing way to travel because you get to see the beautiful countryside. When I arrived, my family picked me up at the bus station, for my father and my sisters live there.

What I like about Nayarit is that it’s not a very touristy place, yet it has beautiful beaches such as San Blas, great weather, and delicious seafood.

One of the most enjoyable things I did was visiting an oyster farm. My father took me to this place called “Los Conchos,” where the people who live there grow oysters in an estuary.  We went all the way to the place where the fisherman  harvest them. We bought two dozens of fresh oysters and ate them with lime, salsa huichol, and a cold beer. It was great!

We also went camping to this little town called San Francisco, or “San Pancho,” as the people from Nayarit call it. There we camped on the beach. After setting the camping tent, I went for a swim in the ocean. Then we made a bonfire at night. My sisters, my father and I told jokes and had a great time around the fire.

Sadly, I had to come back to Juarez. But I will take with me those wonderful moments. I’m looking forward to going back to Nayarit on my next vacation.

How to record yourself for the audio quiz?

There are different options to record your voice for the audio quiz:

-Option 1: Gmail. If you have a gmail account, sing into chat. Using chat, call this number in the US, and leave your message (the quiz) in the school's voice mail: 857-284-8440. Gmail allows you to call any number in the US for free!

-Option 2: Skype. If you don't have skype, you can download it here: http://www.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/

Sign in using the school's account. Skype name: justspeakschool. Password: justspeak1

Under contacts, click "School's Voice Mail," call the saved phone, and leave your message

-Option 3: Dial Directly from a Phone. From a phone in Mexico dial 001-857-284-8440. Keep in mind that this option isn't free.

-Option 4: Use Software such as "Sound Recorder" or "Voice Recorder" Use the "Sound Recorder" program in your PC, or the "Voice Recorder" app in your smart phone. Record your message, save the file, and email it to me.

-I would prefer if you use options 1, 2, or 3. This is because I'll receive your message both as audio and text. However, option 4 is also OK.

Week 11 Future Plans

Listen to the audio about my future plans. Now do the same for you. Record yourself. Use the audio script below to help you prepare

I’m really looking forward to tonight because one of my friends is having a party and all my friends are going. I’m going to get ready in a few minutes, but I don’t know what I’m going to wear yet.

Then tomorrow, I’m meeting my dad and we’re going shopping for a present for my mom. It’s her birthday next weekend, and we’re having dinner in a really expensive restaurant on Saturday night. It’ll be nice to have all the family together.

I’ve started thinking about my holiday, too. It’s in eight weeks, but I’m going to book the flights soon and my friend Carlos is booking the hotel. We’re going to Croatia. The weather in July is usually good – hot and dry – so I’m going to take lots of sunscreen. We’re going to spend all our time sunbathing and going clubbing. I can’t wait!

I know I won’t want to come back to work after that. Actually, I’m a bit bored at work so maybe I’ll start looking for a new job soon. Or even go back to college. It’ll be expensive, but I’m sure it’ll help me get a better job in the end.

Now take the audio Quiz 13 and record your self! (See the instructions on "How to record yourself for the audio quiz?")

Week 5. A Special Holiday

You returned from a holiday yesterday. Read an e-mail from your friend, Mike:

Hi. I haven’t heard from you in a couple of weeks – have you been on holiday? Where did you go? Did you have a good time? Tell me all about it!

Are you coming to the soccer match next Saturday? Come on Cruz Azul!

See you later,
Mike

Now write your reply to Mike's e-mail. Write 100–150 words. Include information about the following:

  • Where you went on holiday.
  • What you saw and what you did.
  • What you liked and didn’t like about it.
  • Answer Mike's other questions.

  • Here's a sample answer:

Hi Mike. Thanks for your e-mail. Anna and I went to Stockholm for a week. We had a really great time. When we booked it, I wasn’t sure about the weather in Sweden but it was very sunny and warm.

Stockholm’s quite a big city and there are a lot of beautiful, old palaces. We went sightseeing every day. We stayed in a hotel in downtown so we could walk everywhere. The hotel organized some excursions and one day we went on a boat trip, which was a lot of fun.

We liked everything about Stockholm, but Anna didn’t like the food. I loved the meatballs and fish, but all the dishes tasted too strange for her. On the last day, I tried reindeer meat – it was OK, actually!

I’m definitely coming to the match on Saturday. I’ll show you some photos of Stockholm.

See you on Saturday (148 words)

What do you see different? Is the verb conjugated in sentence 1? Does the verb change in sentence 2? What else do you see different in sentence 2?

Yes, notice the auxiliary verb "didn't" (did not) in sentence 2. In negative sentences and in questions, we always use the auxiliary verb.
